The changes from 2.0 to 3.0 are dramatic and make it much easier to use. The changes from 3.0 to 3.1 are mostly cosmetic, but this should be the easiest and nicest to use version of the Chess On Ice curling simulator.

To learn the features, read the prior blog post on Version 3.0.
Enjoy!
And I’m now working on Version 4.0, which implements some of the top features planned here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChessOnIce/comments/fli2um/future_features_planned_or_considered/)
Especially:
- Improved physics based on the most current curling engineering research;
- Gamification… no longer just a simulator, soon to be an actual video game; and,
- Ability to save and share (export/import) stone setups and complete games, along with a more powerful undo/redo functionality (more like Chess.com’s for chess).
After that, the app will finally be ready for implementing player vs player over the internet in the following version, and then also player vs computer AI.
Good curling! 🙂

Just downloaded for the first time to the Mac. Running the latest OS. I got this message. “Chess On Ice 3.1 (for MacOS)” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.”
Hi Matt,
Yes, you need to right-click it and accept that it can be opened, since it’s not officially-sanctioned Mac software.
Good curling!

Just wanted to say “THANK YOU” for building this. I’m a business application developer, so I know (a little) about what it takes to make a game like this. It’s very well done!
I have been a curler for about 8 years, recently getting into playing third, with the hope of skipping at some point. This is an amazing tool for analyzing “real” shots and strategies, and I love the random aspect of the shots – it teaches you to react and think on your feet.
I’m definitely looking forward to updates! My suggestion would be to put a visual indicator for the direction of the curl. I’ve gotten better at checking the direction before throwing, but I still send shots off the ice from time to time. Also, I’d be more interested in getting a “hint” about what the best shot is rather than an AI to play against. I would also prefer to play online against someone than to play against a robot. Just my 2 cents.
Hi Chris,
You’re very welcome, and thanks! You’re using it exactly how I do, and how I envisioned others using it, so that’s cool.
I love your idea about a more obvious curling direction indicator, thanks. I have the same issue, and it’s the main reason I have an Undo button. I’ve already added an arrow on the broom for the next update! (Though it likely won’t be released until this spring or summer.)
Good to know about wanting shot suggestions rather than a full AI. I’ll consider that. And yes, playing against others online is the next major feature I’m working on, though it requires a complete overhaul of the entire app first (which I’m about halfway through now) in order to make it possible.
Good curling!

Hey Love this app it’s been a blast with learning some strategies. Wondering if there is way to set the skill level of the individual positions on your team, instead of just the team overall. Might be interesting for planning strategies with your own league team for example.
Hey Dan, thanks for sharing. Glad you’re enjoying it!
Yes, I totally agree, and that’s in my roadmap for a future release.
hi Scott,
I just used your game for the first time – it is FANTASTIC!!! Great work! I love the EYCC details.
Mike
Glad to hear — thanks, Mike!
